The Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the United Nations Human Rights Council determined that the deprivation of liberty of Prof. Ghulam Azam, Mr. Azharul Islam and Mr. Mir Quashem Ali as arbitrary and constitutes a breach of article 9 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and article 9 International Charter on Civil and Political Rights. The Working Group further stated that it, ‘considers it appropriate to refer the allegations of torture and cruel, inhuman treatment to the Special Rapporteur for appropriate action.
