Dhaka: Awami League (AL) general secretary Syed Ashraful
Islam’s speech is false and baseless, JP (Jatiya Party) chairman and
former president HM Ershad has said.
This came as he was speaking at a press briefing at his office in
Banani Monday noon. The JP (Jatiya Party) chairman called the briefing
on the grounds that news coverage of his Sunday’s meeting with Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina wasn’t proper.
“What Islam told reporters about my meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina is false and groundless. His speech has tarnished the image of
mine and my party as well in the eyes of the nation,” the former
president said.
“There was no discussion on whether we will stay with the grand alliance and whether will participate in polls.”
On Sunday night, a 15-member delegation of JP led by Ershad attended the dinner party hosted by the premier.
Ruling out Islam’s speech in which he claimed JP would stay with AL in
the next general election, Ershad said: “I said it before and I’m saying
it again. JP will not take part in any stage-managed election. I don’t
wish to die as a broker.”
Stressing the need for participation of all political parties in the
polls, he said it is the only way to arrange a free, fair, credible,
neutral and acceptable election.
JP will not participate in polls to help someone assume power, the former president observed.
“Ours is an unitary entity. And that’s how we will go to polls.”
JP secretary-general Ruhul Amin Howlader and several others attended the briefing.
